Temperatures are soaring into the 90’s in the Kansas City area, and chances are it will only get hotter. While you may not have given it any thought, you can actually prepare your vehicle for the Kansas City heat – and it’s smart to do so if you want to avoid a possible breakdown. As leading Kansas City auto body repair professionals, we have a few tips to help you avoid a potential emergency.
Are the fluid levels sufficient? The radiator is the most important component to ensure your vehicle’s engine doesn’t become overheated. Make sure fluid levels are up to par, and have them checked each month during the hottest months of the year.
Tires should be properly inflated to avoid unnecessary wear. Most people do a lot more driving during spring and summer months; camping, vacation, just getting out and going to the pools, a movie, socializing with friends. This results in wear on your tires, which typically lose about 1 psi per month. Check the tire pressure every month to make sure tires are inflated properly; this information is usually located on the inner driver-side door.
Is your car’s A/C functioning as it should? No one wants to drive around in 95 or 100 degree weather without air conditioning! If your A/C is blowing air that isn’t cold, it could simply be that it needs more refrigerant. This is probably the issue if you also notice fluid leaking under the front of your vehicle. However, if the air conditioner won’t come on it may be a more serious problem you need to have checked out.
Excessive heat can be dangerous, and the last thing you want is to be stranded on the side of the road when it’s super hot outside. The unexpected does happen occasionally, so it’s best to be prepared for anything no matter how good a shape your vehicle is in. Because of this, it’s good to be ready. Put together an emergency kit containing a few small fans that are battery operated, bottles of water, sunscreen, tool kit, phone charger, flashlight, tire sealant, even good old duct tape can come in handy at the most unexpected times.
