September is known to be a fairly rainy season in Kansas City, which means slick roads, decreased visibility, and an increased risk of becoming involved in an accident. In fact, according to government studies, on a yearly basis wet or rainy conditions contribute to approximately 1.2 million traffic accidents! At Prestige Auto KC, we want to help keep motorists in the metro area safe on the roads this fall, and even in spring months when the state typically receives more rain. Here are a few driving tips for wet weather we believe you’ll find useful.

First of all, inspect your tires. If your tires are extremely worn or not properly inflated, you’re more likely to have problems on wet roads. How to know if you have sufficient tread depth? Simply insert a quarter into the tire groove upside down; if Washington’s head is visible, it’s time to replace your tires. Also make certain your tires are inflated to the pressure recommended by the manufacturer.

Be extra careful and avoid distractions. Stay focused on the road, and avoid texting, eating, talking on your cell phone, or any activity that takes your attention away from the road. Driving should be the only thing on your mind!

Do you need to replace your wiper blades? It’s vital that you can see as good as possible when it’s raining or pouring. If your wiper blades are leaving streaks, it’s probably time to replace.

Drive slowly, and be extra cautious. When it’s raining, drive slower than the speed limit and leave ample room between your vehicle and the one in front of you. When coming to an intersection or making a turn, start slowing earlier than you normally would. Also, keep your attention and thoughts on not only your driving, but other motorists around you! It’s important to be extra vigilant when weather conditions are bad.

Make sure your brakes and lights are functioning properly. If it’s been a while since your brakes were inspected or they’re making any noise, time to have them inspected. Also use your headlights when it’s raining to ensure other drivers can easily see you, and make sure all (headlights, brake lights, turn signals, taillights) are working.

Avoid panicking if you begin to hydroplane or skid. If your vehicle starts to skid, avoid slamming on the brakes. Instead, apply even, steady pressure to the brakes and steer your car in the direction you want to go. If you hydroplane, keep driving straight ahead and ease up on the accelerator until your tires regain contact with the road.

Stay put when you can. When it comes a downpour, the safest bet is to stay at home or wherever you are until the weather lets up. Even when it stops raining, roads will be slick until they dry. When possible, avoid putting yourself in a possibly dangerous situation. More accidents occur when it’s raining, sleeting, or even foggy, so just use common sense.

In the event you do become involved in an accident in the Kansas City area, trust the professionals at Prestige Auto KC for all of your auto body repair and collision repair needs. Our technicians are I-Car Gold Class certified, so you can rest assured your vehicle will look as good as new! We guarantee it.
